In a maritime emergency, the hardest part isn't getting help to come — it's getting that help to find you. The ocean is vast and a distressed vessel is nearly invisible from any distance. This is exactly where the SART comes in: a device whose sole purpose is to make you visible.
Unlike an EPIRB, which alerts rescue coordination centres via satellite, the SART works in real time with vessels and aircraft that are already close to you. When activated, it responds to the radar pulses of nearby ships or search aircraft, producing an unmistakable pattern on their radar screen — a line of twelve equally spaced blips pointing directly to your position.
What Exactly Is a SART?
SART stands for Search and Rescue Transponder. It's an emergency electronic device that, upon detecting 9 GHz X-band radar pulses from nearby ships or aircraft, automatically responds with its own signal. That response appears on the searching vessel's radar as a series of twelve echoes, spaced equally along a radial line. The innermost echo marks your exact position.
It is a completely passive device until activated — no satellite subscription, no registration required. It simply listens for radar pulses and responds. That simplicity is also its strength: there's nothing to set up and nothing that can go wrong with a configuration. When you need it, you activate it and hold it high.

How It Works in Practice
The SART operates on 9 GHz X-band radar. When a ship or search aircraft scanning that frequency sweeps the area where your activated SART is located, the device detects the radar pulse and immediately transmits a response. That response travels back to the searcher's radar and appears as a distinctive pattern on screen.
Effective range depends heavily on how high the SART is held. Height directly increases the radio horizon. At two metres above the water, expect roughly 5 to 10 nautical miles of range. Raise it higher — mounted on a mast, on a life raft pole, or held overhead with an extended arm — and that range increases significantly. This is why every crew member needs to know: hold it as high as possible.

SART vs AIS-SART: What's the Difference?
The traditional SART works only with X-band radar — meaning it's only visible if a nearby vessel is actively sweeping that radar frequency. The AIS-SART is the modern counterpart: instead of responding to radar pulses, it transmits its GPS position directly over the AIS (Automatic Identification System) network.
This means an AIS-SART appears on any vessel's chartplotter and AIS display as an identified target with a name, exact position, and movement — without requiring anyone to point a radar at you.

- Aerial SAR: traditional SART often preferred — many SAR aircraft don't carry AIS
In practical terms, an AIS-SART offers greater range and is more easily detected by modern vessels. The traditional SART remains valuable for aerial SAR operations and environments where searchers may not have AIS. For offshore sailing today, the AIS-SART is generally recommended — though many experienced sailors carry both.
When to Activate the SART
The SART is not an initial distress alert device — that's what the EPIRB is for. The SART is activated when help is already close, or when you believe it might be. Its function is to guide rescuers during the search phase, when they know roughly where you are but can't locate you visually.
- Activate when you hear or see a vessel or aircraft searching in your area
- Activate alongside the EPIRB when abandoning ship — don't wait
- Hold it as high as possible — every metre of height adds range
- Keep it vertical and away from metal structures that can block the signal
- If you're in a life raft, secure it at the highest available point
- The LED indicator will flash each time it receives and responds to a radar pulse
Don't store the SART below decks expecting to retrieve it at the "right moment." In a real emergency — vessel abandonment, sinking — there is no time to search for equipment. The SART must be immediately accessible from deck, kept alongside the life raft and EPIRB.
Is a SART Required in Chile?
The SART is mandatory equipment under the international SOLAS convention (Safety of Life at Sea) for vessels navigating in GMDSS sea areas A3 and A4, and for commercial vessels above a certain tonnage. For recreational vessels, requirements depend on the authorised navigation category.
Chile's Maritime Authority (Directemar) requires at least one SART or AIS-SART for vessels operating in offshore or ocean zones. For navigation in the southern channels and remote areas, consult your local Port Captain before departure — requirements can vary by route and vessel type.
My personal view: if you're sailing more than 10 miles from shore, carry a SART or AIS-SART. The cost of the equipment is negligible compared to what it can mean in a real situation.
Maintenance and Battery
The SART spends years in standby waiting for the one moment it needs to perform flawlessly. Maintenance is not optional.
- Battery: typically 5-year standby life — replace even if never used
- Must maintain at least 96 hours standby and 8 hours active transmission capability
- Function test: check the status LED per manufacturer instructions
- Transmission test: do not perform near other vessels — can cause false alarms on radar screens
- Inspect the waterproof seal and housing condition annually
- Store in its mounting bracket, accessible from deck at all times
- Update vessel documentation if you transfer it to a different boat
Practical Notes from the Captain
After decades at sea, I can tell you that surviving a maritime emergency rarely comes down to what equipment you have — it comes down to whether you know how to use it and whether it's within reach when you need it.
The most common SART mistakes I see: storing it somewhere inaccessible, not training crew on its use, and treating it as an alternative to the EPIRB rather than a complement. These two devices work together: the EPIRB calls for rescue; the SART guides rescuers to you.
One last thing: if you see your SART's LED flashing during an emergency, it means someone has their radar on and is picking up your signal. They're close. Keep the SART held high.
