What to install first, what can wait, and what it actually costs to equip a cruising sailboat.

Marine electronics can become a bottomless money pit if you don't have a clear sense of what you actually need and in what order. I've seen sailboats with USD 30,000 worth of instruments that sail less than boats with a USD 400 chartplotter and a handheld VHF. The key is understanding what each piece of gear does and which are priority based on your type of sailing.
This guide is written for people buying their first sailboat or fitting out a vessel that comes with basic or outdated electronics. I explain each device in practical terms, not technical jargon, and give you a tiered installation roadmap.
Before buying new equipment, always check what the boat you're buying already has installed. Upgrading or replacing existing kit is usually cheaper than installing from scratch — and sometimes the old chartplotter works perfectly well to get started.
Tier 1 — Essential (don't leave without this)
Fixed VHF with DSC
USD 120 – 350 · Garmin, Icom, Standard Horizon
The most important piece of equipment on the boat for communications and distress. Channel 16 is the international distress and calling frequency. DSC (Digital Selective Calling) lets you send an automatic distress call with your GPS position at the press of a button. MMSI must be registered with Directemar. Always pair the fixed VHF with a handheld backup.
406 MHz EPIRB
USD 350 – 800 · ACR, Ocean Signal, McMurdo
Mandatory for offshore navigation (more than 12 nm from coast) and the most important tool if the boat sinks. Class 1 (float-free): floats off the mounting bracket and auto-activates if the boat sinks. Class 2: manual activation, cheaper but less safe. For offshore, always Class 1. Registering with Cospas-Sarsat is free and mandatory — without registration the signal arrives but SAR doesn't know who to look for.
Chartplotter / Electronic charts
Tablet + app: USD 50–150 · Fixed unit: USD 350–1,500
You can start with a marinised tablet running Navionics or iNavX with Chile charts — a good way to learn without the upfront investment of a fixed unit. A fixed chartplotter integrated at the chart table is the definitive system: integrates with depth sounder, AIS and autopilot via NMEA 2000 network. Plan for the fixed unit eventually; use the tablet as backup.
Depth sounder
USD 100 – 400 · Garmin, Lowrance, B&G
Displays depth under the keel in real time. Essential for anchoring at night, entering unknown bays, or navigating areas with uncharted shoals (common in Chile). Usually integrated with the chartplotter in modern systems. The transducer installs through the hull — plan the location carefully before drilling.
Tier 2 — High priority (install as soon as possible)
AIS receiver
USD 150 – 400 · Vesper, Standard Horizon, Garmin
Receives position signals from all AIS-equipped vessels in your area and displays them on the chartplotter. Essential for navigating areas with commercial traffic (Strait of Magellan, Valparaíso, San Antonio). A Class B AIS transponder (transmits and receives) costs more but makes you visible to others — priority if you sail offshore.
Wind instruments
USD 300 – 800 · B&G, Garmin, Raymarine
Anemometer (wind speed) and vane (wind direction), installed at the masthead. Display true and apparent wind in real time. Essential for optimising sail trim and anticipating shifts in variable conditions like the southern channels. Many used boats have them but with faulty sensors — check during the survey.
Autopilot
USD 600 – 3,000 · Raymarine, B&G, Garmin
The autopilot is the most tireless crew member on the boat. On long passages, hours at the helm are unnecessary and exhausting. Price depends on type: tiller/wheel pilot (pushes the helm directly, USD 600–1,200, for smaller boats) or hydraulic/linear (acts on the steering system, USD 1,500–3,000, for larger offshore vessels). High priority if you sail more than 4 hours at a stretch.
Speedo / Log
USD 100 – 300 · Usually integrated with depth unit
Measures speed through the water (SOG and STW). Useful for calculating ETAs, fuel consumption, and current (difference between GPS speed over ground and speed through water). On many boats the sensor is integrated with the depth transducer — one hull fitting for two sensors.
Tier 3 — Comfort and advanced navigation
Radar
USD 600 – 2,500 · Garmin, Furuno, Raymarine
For sailing at night in rain or fog, radar is irreplaceable — AIS doesn't detect objects without a transponder (rocks, islands, small vessels). Open-array radars are more powerful; dome radars more compact. A 4 kW open-array is the offshore cruising standard. In the southern channels, radar is close to essential for navigating in reduced visibility conditions.
Satellite comms (Iridium / Starlink)
Iridium GO: USD 500–900 + USD 30–90/month · Starlink Maritime: USD 2,500 hardware + plan
For areas without cellular coverage — which in Chile offshore and the channels is practically everywhere — satellite communication is your only option. Iridium GO allows text messages, GRIB weather downloads, and low-quality voice calls. Starlink Maritime offers real internet — a paradigm shift for cruising — but at higher cost.
PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)
USD 200 – 400 · ACR, Ocean Signal
A personal EPIRB for individuals. If you go overboard and the boat keeps sailing (or you're the only conscious person left), the PLB transmits your position to SAR satellites. Highly recommended for every crew member on offshore passages. Worn on the life jacket or harness.
Battery management system
USD 300 – 1,500 · Victron, Mastervolt
Battery monitors, shore power chargers, solar/alternator controllers. Strictly speaking not navigation electronics, but the foundation everything else depends on. A poorly managed battery bank shuts down the electronics at the worst possible moment. Priority: know the actual state of the batteries on the boat you're buying.

Important: installation costs too. The figures above are for equipment. Professional installation by a competent marine electrician can add 30–50% on top of equipment cost, especially for systems requiring cables through the mast (wind instruments, masthead lights) or NMEA 2000 network integration.
If you buy a well-equipped used boat, some of this list may already be installed — though you should verify everything works and that registrations (MMSI, EPIRB) are updated to your details.
